Columbus was founded on 14 February 1812 and incorporated as a borough in 1816, and its 905,748 residents at the 2020 census live in housing spanning the entire history of the city. That is the one useful generalisation: there is no typical Columbus house, and any quote given without looking at yours is a guess.

The historic districts are their own category. German Village grew out of Das Alte Südende, the old south end where German immigrants settled, and Victorian Village faces Goodale Park. Much of the early city was built in brick made from clay dug at Mound and High Streets. Houses of that vintage sit on plank subfloors over joists with a century and a half of settlement in them, and they frequently have original hardwood under whatever went down later.
