Newark has been a town since 1802 and a city since 1813, and it has the layered housing stock you would expect from that. The 2020 census recorded 49,934 residents in 22,351 housing units, which makes it comfortably the largest place we work and the one where no two flooring jobs are quite alike.

The older parts of town are the interesting ones. Around the Hudson Avenue Historic District and the streets radiating from Courthouse Square you find pre-war frame houses, many of them on plank subfloors over joists that have had a century to settle.
